style=”text-align: justify;”>I have shared before that when my son was diagnosed with pre-diabetes last October, I felt devastated! That was combined with a high blood pressure diagnostic! Can you imagine how I felt?
I immediately searched for healthy alternatives which would help him stay away from medication! I remember asking his pediatrician for 3 months on my terms! We began our journey to find sugar free and lower calorie items which combined with exercise, would reduce and hopefully remove his condition, allowing him to live a healthy, normal life!
One year later, I am happy to report that we’ve managed to significantly lower his blood pressure and his sugar levels are also normal, which was a big concern for me! Victory came with single steps, which I will be sharing with you today:
- I had him enrolled with a coach on basketball, to give him structured work out time even in the summer, along with bike/tread mill 3 x a week.
- We started a smoothie challenge where we would alternate creating smoothies for each other as a fun way to reduce our calories and sugar during lunch time
- I completely removed sweets and introduced an organic sweetener to him and now he uses it every day!
I am particularly going to share my love for smoothies today with you! My dad used to make smoothies for us in the morning every day. Since I have never been a big breakfast person, I didn’t like the bread and butter and cheese which are a staple of Brazilian breakfasts! I would much rather have something light and quick before going to school, so my dad, used to make me and later for him as well, a daily smoothie!
To this day, the smoothies evoke happy childhood memories and how much love he put into making me breakfast! So I wanted to make sure I continued this tradition with my son, now for stronger reasons!
I use Glucerna because it helps people with diabetes curb the hunger without spiking glucose levels – their products are low in calories and sugar. They also have bars and other products I use and love! Its slow-digesting carbohydrate formula may help some diabetics with weight loss and monitoring blood sugar levels. It is available in many flavors, without a doctor’s prescription.
Today I will be sharing one of his favorite recipes, the Avocado Smoothie:
Avocado Smoothie Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 ripe Avocado
- 1 cup of Vanilla Glucerna Shake
- 1 TBSP of sugar free chocolate syrup
- 1/2 cup of crushed ice
Preparation:
Remove the pulp from the avocado, place it in the blender or mixer along with Glucerna shake and crushed ice, blend it well to a smooth consistency.
Now it’s time to drizzle syrup on the bottom of your smoothie cup and pour the smoothie on top and enjoy it!
Whether you’re managing your blood sugar or your weight, making Glucerna products part of your daily plan is a great way to help get your daily carbs intake. Each product has CARBSTEADY®, or CARBSTEADY®ULTRA which includes slowly digestible carbohydrates designed to help reduce blood sugar spikes.

I became diabetic ten days after becoming 50 in 2011. It’s been trial and error along my journey. I’d tried everything! No carbs, low carbs, you name it! I finally remembered a book that was written many years earlier, entitled Eating Right For Your Blood Type. It was, as has been life changing. My diet is supposed to be mostly plant based, and very little meat. So, I began eliminating some meat from my diet about 5yrs ago, and my diabetes is a distant memory. I make lots of avocado, banana smoothies at least 4 days per week, most times twice per day, with glucerna and I’ve gone from a size 24 to a size 12! I am 60 years old but, I feel 27 most days. I hope my story gives hope to those that are in this battle, as it is a battle. Although, I’m no longer a diabetic, I still have to eat as if I am.

That’s fun that you associate smoothies w/your childhood. My DIL and granddaughter have them all of the time. 🙂

I love the idea of adding something extra to the smoothie. Just think you will never run out of different flavors.

I like avocado, but have never tried it in a smoothie like this. Great idea, especially to help maintain your blood sugar levels rather than spiking all over the place.
