I was invited to attend the advanced screening and interview the cast, but as usual, all opinions are my own.
I had the honor to be invited to the press event in NYC over the weekend and interview the cast of A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood and attend the screening, here is why it definitely shares a message of A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood.
I’m going to confess, I watched the trailer and read the synopsis and thought: it’s a chronicle of an interview somebody did with Mr. Rogers.
Far from it!
It was so much more!
Tom Junod’s story is a beautiful chronicle of his path crossing Mr Roger’s through that interview and how his life and perspective of the world changed along the way.
You know I’m an avid reader, so I went to the original article he wrote, hoping to understand his perspective, before watching the movie.
The article called: Can you say Hero, in the Esquire Magazine, Is a beautiful 10,000 word journey of self discovery and self transformation through acts of kindness witnessed by him, which touched his life forever!
The movie took liberties for the sake of the story and, in Tom’s words: presented very much the relationship he had with Mr. Rogers, but was far from his life and his family’s real life.
A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood
Tom Hanks portrays Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, a timely story of kindness triumphing over cynicism, based on the true story of a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod.
After a jaded magazine writer (Emmy winner Matthew Rhys) is assigned a profile of Fred Rogers, he overcomes his skepticism, learning about kindness, love and forgiveness from America’s most beloved neighbor.

Sitting down with Matthew Rhys was absolutely a highlight for me!
His down to earth, happy self entered the room, greeting us with compliments, not hiding how happy he was to be there with us!
But I did not let his humble attitude when talking about his role in the movie shy away from the fact that his performance is not far from brilliant for many reasons.
The fact that he had to fill big shoes to bring a turmoil of emotions to let the audience be captivated and at the end fall in love with his character: Lloyd Vogel.
The tennis match required to bring to life the real life story and when meeting his screen partner, Tom Hanks.
Susan Watson
