This post is brought to you in partnership with NISSAN USA, but as usual, all opinions are my own.
I’ve spent countless hours driving my son to basketball practices and waiting in school pick-up/drop-off lines. Then 2020 brought so many changes in my teen’s life! Remote learning, no sports, life at home! It was a tough adjustment, and I’ll admit I even began to miss the once dreaded school drop-off line. But 2021 brought excitement and important milestones for my son. He received college acceptances and scholarship offers and started his driving journey!
One of the scariest moments in a mom’s life is giving her child the keys for the first time. As parents, we worry about our children and want to do everything we can to keep them safe. Since teens are still learning to drive, it is tempting to have them learn on an older, already beat-up vehicle rather than trusting them with a new family car.
Today I’m sharing the amazing Nissan Rogue 2021 edition and why the features give me confidence and peace of mind as a mom of a new teen driver. You might even change your mind about giving your teen the old vehicle you have in the driveway because these safety features are perfect for teen drivers.
Driving Lessons with Teens:
Before turning over the car keys, you will spend many hours in the car with your teen driver giving driving lessons and helping them gain confidence on the road.
My son is 6’8”, and my husband is 6’2”. Until we purchased our Rogue, I was always squished in the back. This is a problem we always have!
The Nissan Rogue 2021 has more rear occupant space than the previous generation. Now my husband and son can sit comfortably in the front, and the extra rear space in the new Rogue 2021, gives me even more leg room! Amazing!
Important Safety Features for Teen Drivers:
After my son got his learner’s permit, we discussed the importance of safety while driving—especially cellphone usage. But teen driver safety is about more than just reminding your teen not to text while driving. Even adults forget to check their blind spots sometimes! That’s why technology can be so helpful—especially for new drivers.
Every Rogue for 2021 comes standard with Nissan’s suite of safety technologies called Safety Shield 360 along with a variety of other convenience features.
● Standard Safety Shield 360
I love the Driver Assistance Features, which are a valuable tool for us and for my teen learning how to drive:
○ Rear Automatic Braking
○ Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection
○ High Beam Assist
○ Lane Departure Warning
○ Rear Cross Traffic Alert
○ Blind Spot Warning
These features give me added peace of mind when my son is driving, and I would have far less confidence if he drove a vehicle without them. These systems detect possible problems and emergencies. As far as I’m concerned, blind spot warnings, rear automatic braking and pedestrian detection are essential features for ANY car.
● ProPILOT Assist with Navi-Link
The ProPilot adds that extra layer of driver assistance feature, as it keeps you engaged, but creates an environment that alerts, predicts and helps correct young drivers’ common missteps.
Distracted Driving and Teen Drivers:
Distracted driving is a big concern. I know adults who have gotten into accidents because they were distracted by their cell phones. Texting is a distraction, but so is finding the right music to play.
Your teen will love the tech features of the Nissan Rogue, and the fact that they have a hands free/wireless system to play their favorite tunes and charge their phone. The Nissan Rogue offers CarPlay and Wireless Phone Charging.
When my son gets in the car, he knows that his phone is supposed to stay on the wireless phone charging stations and that he shouldn’t touch his phone while the car is moving. With CarPlay, he can play music playlists on his phone without touching the phone or getting distracted.
Speeding and Parental Peace of Mind:
Did you know that teenagers are more likely to start speeding once they gain confidence behind the wheel?
Check this out: Teen Driving | NHTSA
Speeding is dangerous and increases the risk of getting in an accident, which is why I love the Traffic Sign Recognition and NissanConnect App features in the new 2021 Rogue.
The new Rogue incorporates Traffic Sign Recognition. This can help in displaying the posted limit on your dash, as well automatically keeping you at that posted speed limit.
I wanted to save the best for last. Moms will LOVE the NissanConnect App. I love that you can set a speed alert. It also has the My Car Finder, so I always know where my teen is! There’s even a Curfew Alert!
In case you’re wondering, NissanConnect is a subscription-based system integrating security, entertainment, navigation, and communication features in a single vehicle display screen that connects with your smartphone.
It allows you to send commands to your Nissan from your smartphone or through your Amazon Alexa, allowing you to engage with texts and calls hands-free while you are on the road.
NissanConnect is available in a variety of packages with an extensive list of features, including Apple CarPlay®, Pandora®, Facebook®, and features to help keep your teen driver safe and accountable behind the wheel.
Here are some features that will make moms smile:
- Android Auto™ and AppleCar Play
- Automatic collision network
- Bluetooth®
- Curfew alert
- Emergency call
- Google® Send to Car
- Hands-free text messaging assistant
- Journey Planner
- My Car Finder
- Nissan door-to-door navigation
- Nissan navigation system
- NissanConnect services skill with Amazon Alexa
- Remote door lock/unlock
- Remote engine stop/start

As usual, give me a Trendy shout!

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not the greatest driver. But I’m so glad to see that cars today come equipped with so many saftey features now. I can see why you would feel comfortable letting your son drive this car!

All features are great in this Nissan. But one that I appreciate at this point is the more space in the back of the car.
It is great you have an opportunity to test drive different models.

Smart tips to check anyway, even with the safety devices in place. Nothing is 100% but every extra safety feature is appreciated.

Congratulations of the college offers and scholarships! You must be such a proud mama! Yes, I can only imagine how stressful it must be to send your son out in the world and they are driving when you’ve had total control of that for so long. Really good safety features. The getting distracted while driving is one of the scariest things for me!
Mama to 6 Blessings
Very nice! Looks like it has all the bells and whistles too! You look great in it too!

We drove this car last year when we rented a car. My husband enjoyed driving this car instead of the minivan

my daughter is starting college in the fall, so she will need a car – I was actually looking at the Nissan Rogue for myself before settling for a Dodge Journey because it is a larger car ( my husband is tall, and I wanted him to be comfortable as well), but the Rogue might be worth revisiting for her. Thanks!

Teaching your kids to drive is always an adventure. At least in a car like that, you’re already set up for some adventure!
