I just love the summer, temperatures continue to rise, we spend most of our time outdoors and being in the water is one of our favorite activities in the summer!
Additionally, it helps us to save a huge amount on the electricity bills. For instance, whenever we are outside, we turn the air conditioner off. This also helps in adding more years to the life of the HVAC system. I know that when an AC runs for a long time, it might need timely maintenance and repair.
I was told by one of my friends that her air conditioning system started malfunctioning after continuous usage, which is why she had to call an HVAC company like I Need The Plumber & AC. She also suggested I keep their number handy in case of emergencies. She said, “Try I Need Cool Air if you’re interested; they’re known to be quite reliable.” Anyway, I refrain from overusing my AC because I already know what caused her air conditioner to act weird in the first place.
Most importantly, we love sitting outdoors in summer, which is also one of the reasons why I turn off the AC. We love spending time at the pools in our backyard, in hotels, our local lake or the ocean!
When you think about water safety tips, you also see tips such as swimming and how prevent from drowning, but very common accidents near the water are often forgotten.
Two weeks ago my son cut his toe on a shell at the beach – such a common little summer accident! That didn’t prevent him from enjoying the ocean, but it just reminded me of so many other ways my son could/would get hurt all through the summer and I decided to share my tips to avoid and prevent some of them, without putting a damper on your summer fun!
Apart from these accidents, you need to make sure that the water inside the pool is always clean and safe to avoid any diseases caused due to dirty water. The water from the pool is pumped in a continuous cycle through a system of chemical treatment and filtration, and then back again. This system is linked by a network of pipes, which keeps everything running smoothly. A leak in your pipes or any part of your filtration system can cause damage to your pool, high water bills, and even property damage. It is critical to deal with any problem as soon as possible. So, its better you don’t overlook the plumbing services at the time of pool construction given by the providers like Kamloops plumber(s) if you want to have a fun and safe pool season.
Easy Tips To Prevent Accidents While Playing In The Water During The Summer
Pool
- For me, the concrete and sharp edges pose as the most dangerous, non reported, ways to get hurt in the pool. When my son was little, he swam with his eyes closed and his mouth hit the pool wall….there was blood everywhere! The pool edges for leg and knee scraping and fast walks or running, combined with wet surfaces, often result in minor injuries after a fall! After this incident, we decided to do some concrete resurfacing on the pool deck. It’s so much safer now we have done this however we’re still super careful around the pool. Here is what to do to prevent pool accidents:
- Make sure your child wears goggles, my son has been getting a new pair every summer ever since! He loves them!
- Running or brisk walking on a wet surface is not a good idea, so make sure you are watching your kids while they are playing around the pool and let them know that in that area, they need to walk.
- When getting out of the pool without using a ladder, use the arms first and then the gluteus, to avoid knee and leg scraping, but the ladder is always the best option!
- Diving only in the deep end, if your child swims, where signs are posted. Most pools have no diving signs, especially in hotels, tell your children to be aware of those, if they are old enough to read.
Lake
- Our lake is super shallow, so diving from the diving board comes with a warning sign!
- The bottom has objects people throw when lifeguards are not looking or that they placed there coming from the back part of our trail, when the lake was not open. A triathlon athlete cut her toe in the lake on a metal object, such a deep cut! After that we decided to wear water shoes when going to the lake, since cedar water doesn’t allow visibility.
Ocean
We often go to the beach, in different States, the sand and ocean are not always smooth and easy to walk on, so flip flops or water shoes are always our best friends!
I always have our son wear a water shirt to prevent the burns on his chest and rashes.
My Best Tip
After the shell accident, our long walks on the beach are always all about enjoying the beauty of the location while paying attention to where we’re walking and always keeping CURAD SoothePlus™ Medium Rolled Gauze in our medicine cabinet!
But Because things happen, when you’re having fun and you don’t want your child not to enjoy the fun outdoor time they love so much, prevention works to a degree. If accidents happen, it’s important to keep calm and use the right tools to help your child during that time!
It’s also important than ever to keep wounds comfortable. Hospitals use dressings with ingredients like charcoal to reduce wound odor. Now, CURAD with their SoothePlus products brings this idea home with the soothing, odor-fighting properties of ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda.
With warmer weather comes more outdoor activities and that means plenty more opportunities for your kids to take a tumble, because bruises and scrapes happen, I use CURAD SoothePlus™ to keep their wounds comfortable in the heat.
Whether your child took a tumble playing outside, by the lake or pool, CURAD SoothePlus™ products allow you to keep them as comfortable as possible!
My best advice: do like me, spend a summer weekend outdoors with your family! Go hiking, playing in the backyard, relaxing at the pool or beach or cruise all over the city and make sure you have CURAD within reach, when your loved ones are in need of some TLC on a hot, summer day!
Let me know what your best tips are and as usual, give us a Trendy Shout!

I live in the Sunshine State and almost every day I see on tv or witness in person all sorts of accidents, most of them stupid, because there is no proper education for the kids when it comes to playing in the pool or at the beach. You gave us very useful advice in your article. Let’s have a nice and free of accidents summer!
Andrea
We don’t spend too much time around water (we’re landlocked), so helpful tips on water safety is a great resource for me, not being too familiar with it! I will also be picking up Curad rolled gauze – because my kids are SO accident prone!

My daughter slipped and fell in the pool once and scraped her arm on the way down on the side where the brick is. We always try to swim places now that has rounded edges instead

It’s heartbreaking to read all the news of kids drowning in swimming pools or lakes over the summer months. It’s important to watch out for them as they just want to play 🙁
Alicia Taylor
Ouch! I bet your son does wear goggles now! Accidents do happen. I am also a fan of installing cameras with indoor monitors around swimming pools. Those bandages look great – I haven’t seen them with the baking soda.

Katie Kinsley
Our apartment has a rule that children cannot be in the pool without an adult. It is so important to keep children safe!
Nikki
I agree with you about the concrete and sharp edges at the pool. The few times my son has gotten hurt while swimming has been because of that. One time, he jumped in the pool facing outward towards the sitting area, and my heart stopped as I saw how close his chin came to hitting the concrete edge!
Sheri
In the summer we love to spend as much time outdoors as possible. We hardly like being indoors. We love water activities the most and this is very helpful advice.

These are such great tips! The water is great for summer but you must be super careful!

One thing also is to be very careful running around the pool you don’t want to slip and injure your head. I experienced this when I was younger. My head bled and I was like going to pass out. It could be really scary. Thanks for the tips. No one should oversee these points, these are really vital.
Kimberly @ Berly's Kitchen
Water safety is huge! Most people probably think of drowning and being able to swim, but you’re right. Not running, not diving in shallow areas, and hazards on the beach are also things to think about. This is a really good post. 🙂 Wonderful tips on how to stay safe this summer.
Gloria
I’ve grown up at the coastline, and two very important things to mention about safety when it comes to oceans are currents and sea life. Currents can be incredibly strong so if you are at the ocean side make sure to follow warnings. You do not want to get caught in one and drift away. Same goes with sea life. Especially watch out for jellyfish and urchins. They can cause a lot of trouble.
Tara
When we go on vacation we spend a lot of time in the water. Hotel pools are not made for diving that is for sure.
Stacie
Water safety is so important. It doesn’t take much to get injured. I haven’t heard of this product before. I will have to see if we carry it here.

That’s a good point about swimming with eyes closed. I never thought about that before. I need to buy goggles for my son so he doesn’t bang the edge of the pool too.

When my daughters were growing up we were extremely vigilant around our backyard pool. And every pool party we’d throw involving children (like birthday parties) I’d hire two Red Cross certified lifeguards to stand watch over the water. Your safety tips are a great reminder this summer to think ahead and stay alert!
Jen Temcio
Growing up in arizona where almost every person has a pool, I know how important water safety is. Specifically diving into deep enough water is one that stands out since so many kids get head and brain injuries from this. Great advice.

These are such great water safety tips! My twins spend a ton of time in the pool during the summer. I purchase a 3 pack of goggles for each of them at the beginning of the summer to make sure that even if we lose a pair or break a pair, they still have goggles. Most of our pool related injuries have resulted from swimming without goggles!

I never thought about keeping first-aid stuff on hand while enjoying water fun. But my son has gotten scraps and cuts while running around the pool and not watching where he’s going. I guess I need to add a few things to my summer fun bag so I’m better prepared when these little “ouchies” happen.
Kelly Hutchinson
So many great water safety tips. I think all lake diving boards need a warning sign. Someone could really get hurt if the lake is shallow.

We don’t have a pool or even much of a lake we go to, but we have a Cape Cod house. And my kids are going for three days without us! We’ll have to have big talks about water safety.

We have been to all three this past summer. The ocean for me I just watched every single thing he did because I was a little worried about how rough the tide was. I definitely do the same thing again new goggles every single summer for my kiddos.
