I know the winter comes and as January progresses, the further away sometimes we move from our New Year Goals!
But in 2019, I’ve decided to not let the cold win and keep my fitness and health resolutions in check, by choosing the right winter workout routine!
For me, it was important to find ways to keep moving in the winter, even when it was not a traditional workout setting.
Here are my tips to not let the winter slow you down:
Get Moving Choosing Winter Workout Activities That Make You Happy
I hate the cold and you all know, so it’s imperative to choose activities that are fun or make me happy to help support my goals not to sit and watch TV and stay indoors all winter long! The cold can really get into your bones so moving around helps a lot. Having a well-functioning heater or furnace helps a lot indoors. So, get yours maintained or repaired if it is not working properly. On these days when you want to take a break, it is important to make sure your home is toasty warm with your heating and plumbing, so checking out companies like Flow Pros Plumbing or one in your vicinity to give your system a check, will give you peace of mind when that chill comes. Of course, not all of us have this kind of heating system. It may be your home came with an oil heating system. If this is the case for you, make sure to keep on top of your supply by scheduling a visit from Bonded Oil or another wholesaler. The last thing you want is to run out, after all.
I’m not a runner, so having a home gym, makes things a little easier, since I don’t even have to sit in my car and drive to workout! #NoExcuses
You can check my home gym out HERE.
I’m in a process of revamping my gym room and changing the layout around to better fit my new “toy”, this beautiful bike:
So important to add new things to your fitness routine to avoid boredom and quitting overall!
Try a new path
We’re lucky to live in a small community, which has a 5 mile trail basically in our backyard.
So taking walks after a snow fall or bringing a hot cup of cocoa to feel the cold, crisp air on my face, are things that make me happy!
I invite hubby for midday walks to enjoy a 1/2 mile walk and enjoy the outdoors, when I don’t feel like hopping on my treadmill.
I also love to get my teen out of the computer and invite him to enjoy winter activities.
Making a snow angel playing with your kids is also a great way to keep moving!
Try something new
My gym offers so many classes, so trying out new things is one of the items on my to-do list for this month.
Also resume yoga at my local Yoga Studio, which is long overdue! Yoga just helps me get centered and increases my focus as well!
The Right Gear Makes A Difference
Now that you’ve narrowed down different ways to say good bye to excuses and fitness boredom, it’s time to make sure you have the right gear to help you get your workout/fitness plan moving forward.
Add New Pieces
I often buy new pieces at the beginning of each season to just motivate me to put them on, look pretty and get moving. In an attempt to reduce my carbon footprint, I am a little picky when it comes to buying fitness clothes. You might notice when transitioning to a sustainable wardrobe, that a pair of jeans can last decades, but most socks start losing shape after a few washes. The good news is that there are several brands that make cruelty-free, eco-friendly, and sustainable socks. My choice of such clothing options gives me the satisfaction of doing my part to have a greener lifestyle while also motivating me to work out.
I’ve also added new cold proof pieces to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable walk. After all, nobody wants to freeze to death, right?

I love playing outside! Having the right clothing is so important. And I agree with you that yoga is so good at quieting the mind and getting your focus back. I want to do that again soon as well. For me running is what helps me clear my head. The other night I felt like taking a walk outside to see my chickens just to get some fresh air even if it was dark and cold out.

Staying active during the winter time is never easy, but so very rewarding. More so after the holidays.
Alyssa
Ugh-you’re speaking my language. It has been SOOO cold here lately and I’ve had zero motivation to do anything. You’re inspiring me to get more excited about working out at home though! 🙂
Sarah
I’m not big on outdoor activities when it’s freezing out but I do keep my workouts going. So many activities you can still do indoors
krystal
Wow – those are SO small they must be easy to take on the go!

I have a pair of premium quality sound Bluetooth earbuds by myself and I can tell you that they changed my life . I love them very much! Listening to music or answering the calls now is much easier during my usual workout!

These are so awesome tips to keep motivating yourself. Thankfully, we don’t have any snow or ice right now, or I’d probably be sitting happy and unmotivated in front of the television, lol.

You look amazing, you have always been so fit and an inspiration! I love those earbuds, they look like they work well. My daughter is super active, she’d love them.

It looks like you’ve figured out lots of ways to keep moving this year! I’ve always been concerned about headphones for runners and bikers, fearing they won’t hear traffic. However, it seems like my fears might have been for nothing.
Heather
This is awesome. We don’t technically have winter here, so we don’t know what it’s like.
Amy Desrosiers
I wish the streets around here were not loaded with so much ice! I do go to the gym regularly so that really helps!
Terri Steffes
These are great tips! I love the winter and I love going out in the cold. I know it is bitter sometimes, but even 5 minutes makes me feel fantastic!

These are good points! The changing weather should be a reason to go out and try things not stay in.
Melanie
I’ve been trying to kickstart a few new workout routines. My favorite is still a weekly barre class that my sister and I do together.

Winter has been crappy here at my neck of the woods. If it’s not super cold, it’s usually raining.
Amber Myers
Oo I need these earbuds. I try to work out no matter what it’s like outside. Granted, I’m in Texas, so we rarely get snow. But it does get cold. I just add cold weather gear on and go on my jog!
Ashley
Great tips! I admit, I’m totally bad about getting my workouts in when it’s freezing outside. I prefer to trail run, so I struggle to get up the motivation to venture outside. But these tips should help!
Stacie
Excellent tips. I have a gym membership so I can keep my fitness routine going no matter what the weather is doing outside.
Candy
We live on a farm. Everything takes more time and work during the winter. We get a great workout everyday
Jeanette
These are all great ideas! I go to the gym three times a week but I do know in the winter time it is less motivating to go because you are in your nice warm bed and you have to convince yourself to get out of it.
